€870,000 Theft Highlights In-House Payroll Vulnerabilities
Jailing of Payroll worker for stealing €870,000 highlights in-house payroll vulnerabilities
Payroll security has once again leapt to the forefront of stakeholder consciousness following the sentencing of a payroll worker for stealing €870,000 from Virgin Media TV.
Kellie Walton, a former Virgin Media employee pleaded guilty to 10 counts of theft from the station, amounting to €870,500 and has been sentenced to four years in prison. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Walton had been employed as a payroll administrator with Virgin Media TV and began stealing money from the company in 2009.
Judge Melanie Greally remarked that Walton had acquired a position of “very considerable responsibility” and had gained almost exclusive access to the payroll system. From this position she had used “a degree of deception and sophistication” to conceal her activities over a long period of time.
Both the scale of the crime and its’ considerable duration have alarmed employers and many are reconsidering their current in-house payroll processes.
