Public Holidays or Bank Holidays
With three of our nine Irish public holidays coming up in the next few weeks, it is vital that employers are aware of their obligations in this area. You may be surprised to hear that this is one area where many employers actually overpay employees as they do not fully understand the legislation.

In summary, Full Time Employees who are normally scheduled to work are entitled to their employers’ choice of the one of the benefits below in respect to Public Holidays:
Part Time/Casual Employees who are normally scheduled to work are entitled to one of the benefits below on the condition that they have worked 40hrs in the previous 5 weeks:
- A paid day off on that day
- A paid day off within a month of that day
- An additional day of annual leave
- An additional day’s pay
Full Time Employee who are not normally scheduled to work are entitled to 1/5th of a Public holiday benefit.
Part-Time employees who are not normally scheduled to work are entitled to 1/5th their average weekly earnings over the previous 13 weeks worked if they meet the qualifying entitlement criteria.
